Trying to economize on salon costs, and highlights seemed the easiest way to start. My hair is med-dark brown with light brown professional highlights. Have had bad experiences where the self done 'highlights' came out awful brassy bright red and fried so I was a little nervous. This kit got good reviews (thanks those that reviewed this - I rely on Amazon reviews now for most purchases so I'm trying to be faithful doing them myself.) I purchased at my local store after doing the research here.
The kit was easy to use. Just pour in the liquid to the tray, mix in the powder and start. There were no bad smells that made my eyes water, no dripping or mess. I applied the paste to the needed touch up area: 2-3" of too dark looking roots and bangs, following the highlights I already have.
I wasn't crazy about the finger comb thing, it just kind of deposited a big lump of mixture at the start point -- so I just did it like that to start each piece off but then used...Read more

In the passed, I have always used L'Oreal Hi-Light Styliste Brush-On Highlights and as with that one, like this one which I just recently used for the first time, you need to use it in moderation, so just highlight and NOT dye your entire hair with it. Also, leave it on long enough to get rid of any yellow/orange tones.
I have ash blond hair and it has happened often that after the first application it has turned yellowish because I did not leave it on long enough, so now to be on the safe side, I always get 2 boxes in case I panic cause it lightens so fast and then I end up washing it out too fast realizing I should have left it in longer to get rid of the yellow tints. I do not know about brunettes, but if you have blond, dark blond, ash blond like hair, the key is to do scattered thin highlights approximately 5-6 on each side of the head and leave it on until it is pretty much platinum to avoid any funky colors and then these products will do their job. Also put more at...Read more

A few months ago I dyed my hair back to it's natural color, a level 8.5 blonde, it looked great, but I felt like I was lacking some sunshine in my life. I picked this one because using the cap takes for-ever, and I wanted to do something subtle and quick. The concept of the finger comb thing looked so cool to me. I wanted to try it out.
It turned out being kind of a pain in the ass. It's not a rubbery fingertip like I'd imagined at all. It was kind of rigid plastic device that slipped off my finger constantly. I feel like I've done better with an old toothbrush like I usually do. I ended up having to repeatedly dig the unused formula out of the trash and redo sections of my hair over the course of an evening, since it's really really hard to get a nice, even coverage with this for some reason. I'd catch myself in the mirror and spot a massive chunk if hair that I really wanted to go back over.
The color does look really good, it lightened my hair maybe a half or three...Read more
